Frequently Asked Questions
I don't have email or a computer, can I still join the ladder?
Yes. Contact Rick Simpson or Willie Weir and they will set up an email account for you to use with the system. Once you're registered, you can participate via phone. Other players will call you, and you them, to work out matches. You will still need to issue challenges and record results on the website. The site is accessible from any computer with internet access, including the one in the Clubhouse.
What are the World Bowls Match play rules?
The World Bowls Match play rules are listed below this FAQ section. Just scroll down for the specifics. The Match Play game was selected for the ladder because a match can be completed in 1-2 hours.

Who can I challenge?
Your first challenge can be against anyone on the ladder, including the #1 spot. After your first challenge you can only challenge people three places above you. So choose you first challenge wisely.
Can a challenge someone again who I've just played?
Yes, but to be fair to other players on the ladder please wait at least five days, AFTER your match, before re-challenging the same opponent. You can however, challenge another player immediately after you have recorded results. The 5 day waiting period only applies to challenging the same opponent you've just finished playing.
I don't understand the tie-breaker?
The two games played are nine end games. The total score at the end of nine ends determines the winner. The three end tie-breaker is scored differently. The person who is closest to the jack (no other bowls are counted) wins that end. If you are closest to the jack on the first two ends ... you win the match.
Occasionally I log in and the site indicates I'm logged in, but when I try to challenge someone, I get an error that I'm not logged in?
There have been a few reports of this problem occurring. We haven't been able to figure out the cause of the faulty log in yet. When you encounter this problem, just log in again. In all cases, logging back in fixes the problem. If you encounter this problem again, please email the ladder admin and let them know the problem has occurred.
The person I've challenged has not responded. What should I do?
You can always look them up in the roster and give them a call. If they don't respond, they will automatically forfeit the match in 10 days. If you'd rather not wait, you can cancel the challenge and challenge someone else.
The person who challenged me forfeited, but I can only forfeit myself?
You're right. You can only forfeit for yourself, not your opponent. The Challenger needs to login and "cancel" the match themselves. If there is a reason why the challenger cannot cancel the match, contact the ladder admin before the 10 day match period expires.
I've been challenged but am too busy to play. Should I forfeit?
Probably. The ladder is meant to promote competitive play amongst members. If you don't forfeit, your challenger will have to wait 10 days in order to be able to challenge someone else. That's a drag for someone who wants to play. Go to the bottom of the message you received and click on the link to record your match results. Then click the "forfeit" button.
What if I go out of town for a long time?
You can take a "break" from the ladder. No one will be able to challenge you while your taking the break. This is good because it prevents others from challenging you and being unable to play while they wait for the automatic forfeit to occur. Keep in mind that when you return to the ladder you will be placed at the bottom.
I forgot my password, now what?
Your login information, including your password was emailed to you when you registered. You can look up your password in that email. If you can't find the registration email, click on the log in link. There's a "forgotten your password?" link. Click on that to get a new password.
I'd like to change my email address, how do I do that?
Log into the site and then click on the "admin" link near the top of the page. The page will refresh and there will be a link to change your email address.
I'd like to change password, how do I do that?
Log into the site and then click on the "admin" link near the top of the page. The page will refresh and there will be a link to change your password.
I'd like to change my phone number, how do I do that?
Log into the site and then click on the "admin" link near the top of the page. The page will refresh and there will be a link to change your phone number.
What do the "i" and "c" letters next to player's ranking mean?
The "c" next to the player's rank means they are currently involved in a challenge. They cannot be challenged by someone else. The "i" next to the player's rank is a link to information about that player. Clicking on the link will show the match results for the player.

Ladder Match Rules (Modified World Bowls Rules)
1.Singles: Four bowls per player.
2.Prior to the start of a match each player will be allowed two trial ends (four bowls per player each way).
3.Each match will consist of two sets, each set played over 9 ends. The winner of each set will be the player with the most shots at the completion of the 9th end. The winner of the match being the best of two sets. (The tie-breaker is not a set).

A set will be decided if at any point it becomes impossible for one player to draw or win the set given the number of ends remaining. (Example: Player One leads Player Two by 9 points after 7 ends. Player One is declared the winner because Player Two can only score 8 points in the ends remaining).
4.If the score is tied after the last end of a set, the set is drawn. If the match is tied (two drawn sets or one set each) after the two sets have been completed, a best of three ends match tie breaker will be played to determine the winner. The match tie breaker is decided by the winner of each end and not by the total number of shots won in the three ends (like match play in golf)

If at the completion of a deciding third end of a match tie breaker the scores are equal (one or three ends being recorded as a "no shot"), a fourth tie breaker end will be played. (Example: The jack is delivered long and both players end up putting all four of their bowls in the ditch. This would constitute a "no shot" end.)
5.In all other cases a "no shot" end will count as one of the 9 ends.
6.Opening Play:
First Set:
The winner of the toss prior to the start of the match shall have the option to either take the mat and have the jack and first bowl or allow the opponent to have the mat, jack and first bowl.
Second Set:
The winner of the first set shall have the option to either take the mat, have the jack and first bowl, or allow the opponent to have the mat, jack and first bowl.

Should the first set be drawn, the winner of the last scoring end in that set shall have the option to either take the mat and have the jack and first bowl or allow the opponent to have the mat, jack and first bowl.
Match Tie Breaker - First End:
The players shall toss and the winner of the toss shall have the option to either take the mat and have the jack and the first bowl or allow the opponent to have the mat, jack and first bowl.
Match Tie Breaker - Fourth End (if required):
The players shall flip a coin and the winner of the toss shall have the option to either take the mat and have the jack and the first bowl or allow the opponent to have the mat, jack and first bowl.
7.In all ends subsequent to the first in each set (including the match tie breaker), the winner of the preceding scoring end shall have the option to either take the mat and have the jack and the first bowl or allow the opponent to have the mat, jack and first bowl.
8.No burned ends. Re-spotting the jack.

If a jack in motion passes completely outside the boundaries of the rink of play, the end should not be declared dead. Instead, the jack should be centered at the two meter mark. This spot should be marked with chalk before the beginning of play.
