US OPEN 2008: DAYS 5 & 6 (October 17 & 18)

I'm up at 5:30 again; I'm in the habit now after 6 straight days of it. But there's no more bowling. Damn! Well, all the better since I've got some ground to cover here, having eschewed the blog last night for a trip to opera! You see, I simply had to attend, dahling! One must cut one's bowls with a bit of culture now and then, don't you agree? OK ... where was I .... and where do I begin?

It is a tale of two days, for sure. Wednesday was the first day of the pairs. It dawned grayer than the others but was still pleasant enough and I made a few extra turns on my ride south to Lake Merrit to wake up my raggedy sinews and take in a few new neighborhoods along the way. This town is so rich when it comes to houses and trees and gardens ... lots of age and character, and personal touch... but I digress.

Jefferson Park Wins Inaugural Seafair Trophy......

Submitted by hsyder on Mon, 08/04/2008 - 8:47am.

Jefferson Park hosted Woodland Park for the honor of being the first Seafair Trophy Winner.

In an intense competition 5 teams of bowlers from each club played 2 games to decide who would win.  In the morning set of games, Jefferson Park prevailed, winning 4 and losing 1. After a very nice lunch, Woodland Park won the afternoon session by 3 games to 2 with the Blue Angels roaring overhead.  This made Jefferson Park the overall winner by 6 games to 4.

It was a very exciting finish as it was all decided by the last game to finish.  Jefferson Park were leading by 14-11 going into the last end with Woodland threatening to have a big end to win the game.  The hero was Chris Davis who delivered a great last bowl to prevent a Woodland Park win.

Jefferson Park Club Singles

Submitted by hsyder on Mon, 07/14/2008 - 5:34pm.

The Jefferson Park Club Singles Tournament was contested under a blue and cloudless sky on July 12th and 13th.  A total of 12 bowlers played in two sections of six in a round robin.  After five intensely competitive games Rodger Green and Chris Davis were the winners of their respective sections.  In a final playoff which was watched by an enthusiastic cheering section, Rodger prevailed with a score of 18-5 and is the 2008 Jefferson Park Club Singles Champion.  Congratulations to both Rodger and runner up Chris and to all the bowlers and markers who made this tournament a success,

How Flat IS the Green?

Submitted by wweir on Thu, 12/20/2007 - 11:45pm.

green 1

To a passerby or to a casual bowler, Green #1 at Jefferson Park Lawn Bowling Club looks perfectly flat. But to the Greens Chair and the donut crew (Richard Krueger, Doug Bradley, Becky Barnett, Its Nishikawa & Chris Davis), it looks like this:

green #1 chart

The edges of the green fall off as into an abyss. The corners are sloping down at an angle akin to a water slide. And there are annoying ridges that shoot up like the Cascades.

Never Give Up

Doug Bradley and I had three scheduled games after advancing to the 6th Flight Pairs. Unlike the day before, we both had a good feel of the green. Our first match was against a couple of Aussie’s. It didn’t start well. They carried the jack back on the second and third ends, scoring a three and a two. Down 5-1 after three ends (16 end match), it is easy to think, “Here we go again.” But after 5 days of competing, the one thing I’ve learned is how fast a game can completely turn around. And this one did. Doug kept putting his first two bowls near the jack and then one in back to cover. Our opponents scored just four more points and we won 22-9.

Showing 1 - 10 of 22.
