Even our 3 youngest bowlers, all born this spring, came out dressed in their whites.

Brunch-n-Bowls hosts were Llysa Holland & Andrew Litzky and there's something magnetic about them. Wherever they go the crowd follows. The day was gorgeous and all 8 rinks were in full swing by 10:30am. We even had visitors from Florida! Check out the new Florida club pin in the pin display box. The frittata, the scones and the pasta casserole were all big hits, not to mention the coffee from Galaxie Espresso. Every good bowler needs his/her morning cup of fuel. It was a wonderful day of bowling and a nice way to end the Brunch-n-Bowl season. Thank you to everyone!

Interesting characters came out of the woodwork this year to attend the JPLBC Pumpkin Bowl on October 27th. Marie Antoinette and her friend with the tall pink hair showed for the event. Other noted guests included Jerry Garcia, the Blue Hat Lady, the Man in Plaid, and the Ghoulish Guy (pictured above). All enjoyed what the night had to offer. Bowlers bowled a short 6-end game of Cutthroat followed by chili and cornbread, then pumpkin carving, then more chili. Thank you to everyone who participated in making this event a frightenly good time!
"Leagues" are weekly games where scores are kept and tallied at the end of the series to declare a winner. We have enjoyed the mixed pairs "Twilight League" for several years. In 2004 the club started a men's league "Men with Big Bowls", and in 2006 a women's league, "Bowl Busters". There are a lot of new faces in Leagues — it’s a great way to get up to speed with the skills and etiquette while building friendships. All leagues feature fun first and competition second.
Bowl Busters is a women’s league started in 2005. No experience is necessary! We’re all beginners sometime, and most of us were beginners in the last 3 years or less. New bowlers should take a lesson or two before bowling season begins to learn the basics of the game.
Bowlers wanting to improve their game can come to the “Bowling Skills Boot Camp” offered for the first time ever! Have fun stepping through some skill challenges May 20-22, 7-9pm. Boot Camp is open to all club members.
For the 2008 season, club membership is required to join the league. Become a JPLBC club member, and then secure your place in Bowl Busters. Invite your girlfriends and make it a regular “night out” on the greens.
Few of us make it to every league night, but that's OK because the only score you hurt is your own. There is of course, a prize for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners, plus a bonus prize awarded to a bowler with perfect attendance. Winning isn't everything -- Showing up counts for a lot. Having fun counts the most!
To register, you must email Janice Bell (janfbell@gmail.com or call 206-721-1042). To join any club league, club membership is required. The $10 league fee holds your place in Bowl Busters and league membership is on a first come basis. You may MAIL your check for the $10 League Fee to Janice Bell (contact her for her address) or bring it June 4th. League fee checks are payable to “JPLBC”.
Do a few pre-league lunge steps and work on your gin-and tonic technique.

The Bowl Buster 1st Place champion was also a first-year novice player. Nicole Price joined the league to spend some time with a friend, and maybe to give her husband some quality time with their young daughter who would wander by and watch. Nicole swears her (almost) weekly attendance was not only good for her final score, but also for her sanity. Danielle de Clerq battled for first place, but went home a 2nd place winner, and Kat Marriner placed 3rd in the overall standing.
Amy Alesio, one of the 5 women who attended every night of league, won the drawing to receive a brand new set of bowls. Showing up has it’s perks!

The inaugural year of the JPLBC women’s league, Bowl Busters, came to an end August 9th, 2006. Novice player, Nita Chambers won 1st place by a Plus Point and was toasted by her league mates as she sipped from the Silver Winner’s Chalice – aka the “Bowly Grail”. Second place prize went to Jorji Knickrehm, while Marcia Venture won 3rd place also by a Plus Point.
Marcia Ventura also won the "Gold Star Attendance Award" -- a vintage, gold-cased lawn bowling measure. She plans to take the measure and her prize money with her on her trip to Australia later this year.
The "Silver Jigger" award went to the member who demonstrated the highest degree of socialability of our league. Nita Benetin won this award for her generous gift of "chocolat martinis" blended for all. Thank you Nita.

Bowling begins at 7pm, but the clubhouse opens at 5:30pm. Feel free to come by and put something on the grill and enjoy a tasty beverage. We draw for games at 6:50pm. It is part of the ethos of JPLBC to start on time – a charming, un-Seattle kind of thing to do.
If you are going to be a few minutes late and don't want to miss the draw, call the clubhouse at 762.2490 and we'll throw your name in the mix. If you miss the draw, you'll be a spectator. YOU MUST CALL by 6:45pm
#1 You must sign in at the club register by the front door.
#2 You must find the brass token with your name on it (right inside the front door) and bring it up to the game table. This is how we draw for games.
#3 Put on your name tag! If you forgot yours, make a temporary one using the press-on sticker type in the name tag drawer.
#4 (optional) Select your bowls from the bowls rack. It’s first come, first serve for using house bowls. If you prefer a certain set, come early and claim them for the game.
League games consist of 10 ends (that’s 10 times back and forth across the rink). Actual time varies, but a game generally takes a couple of hours to play.
You're welcome to hang out and enjoy the late summer evening after your game is finished -- bask in the glow of your accomplishments or drown your sorrows amongst friends who understand. You can even bowl a second game just for fun!
Smooth-soled shoes are a must! No heels. Rugged-soled shoes are not as good as fine treads. In big-time competition, shoes are required to be smooth as a baby’s bottom. Fortunately, we don’t go that far.
Whites are not required.
Bring a jacket. We start in Junuary, so evenings are always chilly to downright cold. Seems wrong, but do the best you can and dress for cool, damp weather the first few weeks of league.
As the weather warms up, so do the mosquitoes. They come out at dusk and pry on the sweet flesh of Bowl Busters. Cover up or splash a little repellent.
The club has guest bowls you may use, but any other bowler can take the bowls you prefer if they arrive before you. Come early to claim your bowls of choice. Better yet, buy your own!
A few other specialty items are nice to have and easily affordable. Please consider purchasing your own gripping cream, bowls measure, and chalk. Small selections of these are available at the club. Ask Kat.
Bring a hand towel for wiping your bowls. As evening falls, the dew rises and bowls get harder to hold onto. Bring a towel, wipe bowls off before each turn, and before you put them in the box or your carrying case.
Bring your own dinner or something to share with the group, if you like. The grill will be hot, and the club has basic condiments. Plates, cups, silverware and serving utensils are all available at the club.
Bring your own beverage. For league night, we have a banquet permit so you are welcome to bring your beer, wine, or spirit of choice. Non-alcoholic drinks are also permitted. Again, you are welcome to bring for just yourself or share with the group.
Bowlers don’t melt! We bust some bowls regardless of poor weather conditions. A Florida-like monsoon squall, flooding the greens would cancel the game; a damp chill in the air does not. Not once since the inception of Bowl Busters has the game not gone on.
Help set-up and take-down! Anyone coming early can pitch in and help setup the rinks for the games, roll out the grill and set up a table outside. At the end of the evening, those same items are neatly tucked away, garbage is taken to the dumpster and someone with a vehicle takes recyclables home.
Ride a big machine! We need league members to “roll the green” with the awesome, side-winding machine. This takes a lesson and some practice, but we get a better green and you gain a lot of respect.
Maintenance Mondays! Each week a volunteer crew works on keeping the greens and the grounds in lovely condition. If you have the time to help mow a lawn (or the green), weed a garden, and other volunteer activities, please come out and help Monday nights from 6pm until dusk from June through August.
Your league standing is determined by "Wins", then "Plus Points", and finally by "Total Points". Each time your team wins (remember your team changes each week) you get 1 point. We also tally the score of each game, so you receive 1 Plus Point when your team wins by 5 or more points. If there is a tie in determining who Busts the most Bowls, we go to Total Points to declare a winner. Total points are of course, your scores from each of the games you played.
We'll keep score each week and the results will be posted on the web site and at the club. No shames in your standing since girls kick-ass no matter their score.
Girls kick ass! We play to win, but playing a good game and loosing is almost as fun. Celebrating a good shot, even by your opponent, is good form. Similarly, there is no shame in a bowl gone bad; it happens to all of us. Take the game serious enough to learn how it’s played, not so serious that it’s no longer fun.
The weather cooperated and so did the crowd. Seven rinks were set for 7 training skills. Just when you think you're a pretty good bowler, leave it to the training skills to shine a light on area for improvement. A taste of reality - one might say. Thank you to all the hosts who stepped up to make the Late Summer Games possible and fun. It was a great chance for co-ed casual bowling, socializing and fabulous sunsets.
Notices about the weekly game will be broadcast to all interested parties through the "Go Bowling" list serve. You must sign up on the listserve to receive email notices about the game.
If you have any questions, feel free to email Nita Chambers at: nitabug515@aol.com

2008 Season
Tuesday Nights, June 3-July 29
Status: Full!
Read the article about MWBB that ran in the Seattle P-I.
This is not your typical lawn bowling league. We don’t wear whites. We sometimes cheer and shout. We are not retired. We are actors, musicians, landscapers, architects, software engineers, teachers, etc. (OK. One guy is retired).
Men With Big Bowls began in the summer of 2004 not as a group of avid lawn bowlers, but as a group of guys that wanted an excuse to spend time together. The inagural season was so successful that the number of bowlers was expanded to 32 in 2005, to 36 in 2006 and this season we're maxed at 48.
The league is relaxed, yet competitive. We don’t take ourselves too seriously as represented by our coveted trophy—a large engraved metal turkey platter.
Rather than traditional double or triples teams selected at the beginning of the season, each week teams are drawn from the pool of guys that show up.
Want to join us? We’re sorry, but the league is full. But you can get on the waiting list. If that list gets big enough … we’ll start another league.
For more information contact mwbb@seattlebowls.org.

Over nine weeks 36 guys compete on the greens of Beacon Hill, but only one gets to have his name engraved in the coveted "Turkey Platter". John Fulton is that man. He joins the legendary likes of E. Ray Anderson and Chris Q. Davis as a champion. A champion with Big Bowls.
On a night when most would have put their money on David Branch who had held the leader's yellow towel for six weeks, Fulton managed (with the help of doubles partner Gregg Loughridge) a nine-point victory over Tom Zachary and Gene Freedman. That gave him the plus point he needed to edge out Vic Valdez who had come from behind (with the help of David Drummond) to edge out Anthony Peiffer and Richard Glasman.
Mike Larson assured himself third place with a victory over favorite David Branch.
This band of bowling brothers will reconvene next year to eat heated tubes of meat, consume beverages and roll slightly-less-than-round orbs on the field of green in pursuit of the silver turkey.
