This annual event is a competition among bowlers who represent the seven divisions of Bowls USA. Each division hosts "Play Downs" for men's and women's pairs and singles. Winners in each division travel to the national championship. While the Bowls USA sponsors the event, it is hosted and operated by a club within a division.

In 2011 and 1998, the US National Championships were hosted by Jefferson Park Lawn Bowling club.
