Congratulations to the NW Division Class of 2013!
The NW Division tournament season wrapped up on September 8 with our annual Novice Singles tournament held at Jefferson Park in Seattle. Perfect late summer weather — blue skies, sunny and warm with a gentle breeze — made for a great day of bowling, marking and spectating. We had seven novices (i.e. first or second year bowlers) turn out, two for their very first tournament. Drawn into sections, the seven played three fourteen-point games to determine ranking and playoff spots. Paul Shapiro and Claus Windelev went undefeated in group play to earn the honors of vying for the top spots. Paul got to work quickly building a healthy lead over Claus. Not giving up, Claus pulled back some points by winning several ends. In the end, however, Paul's lead proved to be too big and the final — and title of 2013 Novice Champion — went to Paul Shapiro of Jefferson Park, with Claus Windelev coming in second. Over in the other playoff match, Wendy Miller and Sarah Lockenvitz — after being runners-up in their respective groups — fought it out for third place. In a very good contest, the two see-sawed their way to an 11-11 tie before Wendy scored a three to put the game away and take third place overall.
Congratulations to the winners and thanks to all of the competitors — also including Dennis Duroff and Monica Coulter of Jefferson Park, and Steve Wilner of Westmoreland Park in Portland — for making this a most enjoyable day out on the green, and lively and fun tournament.
I would also like to thank Russ for working hard to make this tournament a success and to all the markers who participated to make sure the bowlers had a great time by helping them with all the bowls etiquette and answering their questions.
