Need lots of volunteers. Remember it's the work we do in the off season that makes the greens great in the summer, and thanks for an awesome tournament season.

HOUSEKEEPING ITEMS

THE GREENS

The Greens....Wow!!! they have been getting lots of play this glorious summer, but when the summer ends, the work begins, and we need lots of volunteer support. Here's a list of what's on tap for the fall.

  1. A new irrigation system will be installed. There will be lots of digging and trenching. Plan to get dirty. Sept/Oct

  2. Green 1 need verticutting, sanding and re-seeding. Sept/Oct

  3. Green 2 gets plugged and sanded. Sept/Oct

As a volunteer organization, the work is ours to maintain this wonderful green space. Though many of you only bowl during the summer, in order to keep the greens fantastic (green 2) and improved (green 1) is really a year round job. Love to develop a volunteer list for these upcoming items this fall. Please email me at paul@paulshapiro.com.

JPLBC Updated Dog Policy

  • - All dogs on leashes or in crates

  • - No dogs on the greens

  • - Tournaments: no dogs allowed outside (dogs may be kept crated inside)

UPGRADED WIFI!

Big thanks to Bill Gilroy who researched and got us a hotspot through a company called Mobil Citizen: a low-cost provider of cellular hot spots for non-profit organizations. The old perf was about 1.44 Mbits/sec downloads. The cellular hot spot supports 3G and 4G. The savings is about 55% since we decided to maintain the land line for calling 911. So we have more juice for less. Please thank Bill when you see him!

Introducing the Membership Assistance Program

The Jefferson Park Lawn Bowling Club would like everyone to have the opportunity to enjoy the sport of lawn bowling.  The membership assistance program is designed for those potential or renewing members who find the cost of membership to be too much.  Eligibility is determined based on household income that falls at or below 200% of the 2018 Federal Poverty Guidelines as shown on our website.

https://seattlebowls.org/membership-assistance-program

Eligible potential or renewing members may apply for assistance throughout the year, starting on December 1.  Memberships are not prorated for partial years.  Applications may be submitted online.  JPLBC will determine the number of assistance discounts granted and the percentage discount annually.  Discount awards are not guaranteed.

Assistance is applied as a percentage discount to the annual membership fee (50% for 2019).   It does not apply to the cost of league fees, tournament fees, or any other cost.

VOLUNTEERING

Making Dinner at YouthCare's Orion Center (w/Paul Shapiro)

April 18 4:30 - 7:00 pm

This past year JPLBC has been supporting Youthcare through donations, and I have been involved with cooking meals for Youthcare at both their Orion House and the Pathways House. I have scheduled a dinner to cook for 60 homeless youths on Thursday April 18, and I would love to get a team from JPLBC as the volunteers.

  • Here is what participation entails.

  • Arrive at the Orion Center (Denny Triangle Area) and work from 4:30PM to 7PM. Tasks involve cooking , serving and cleaning up.  I will be making the menu, buying food and coordinating. We need 6 people who would like to participate and must be over 18 years old. If you are interested, please call, text, or email me. Another great way to show the community what an awesome JPLBC we are.

JPLBC HOUSEKEEPING

Club Procedures Orientation Session
Saturday, March 9th at 10 am (w/Brian Nichols)

As many of you may have discovered the key lockbox code has been changed as of
January 1, 2019. I have been asked many times, “How do I get the lockbox code for
club access?” Answer: Members may have access to the lockbox key if they
meet the following criteria:

  • Full membership in the club for at least one year

  • Active volunteer with a minimum of 10 hours volunteering with club activities such as grounds and house maintenance, hosting Friday night Bowls and Barbeque, club events, managing tournaments, etc.

  • Knowledgeable about Club Opening and Closing – How do I learn this?

    • Come to the orientation session to learn the procedures and responsibilities at the club

Members meeting the above criteria may request the code to the lockbox from the
Membership Chair. DO NOT give this code to others. Only the Membership Chair is
authorized to give out the code. The lockbox code may be changed annually.

Making Dinner at YouthCare's Orion Center (w/Paul Shapiro)

This past year JPLBC has been supporting Youthcare through donations, and I have been involved with cooking meals for Youthcare at both their Orion House and the Pathways House. I have scheduled a dinner to cook for 60 homeless youths on Thursday April 18, and I would love to get a team from JPLBC as the volunteers.

  • Here is what participation entails:

  • Arrive at the Orion Center (Denny Triangle Area) and work from 4:30PM to 7PM. Tasks involve cooking , serving and cleaning up.  I will be making the menu, buying food and coordinating. We need 6 people who would like to participate and must be over 18 years old. If you are interested, please call, text, or email me. Another great way to show the community what an awesome JPLBC we are.

IN MEMORIAM

Wallace Meyers, long time member of JPLBC, passed on December 28th, peacefully in his sleep at around 5 in the morning.  He had been struggling with late-diagnosed Alzheimer's and seemed ready to "move on."  His Celebration of Life was at Wesley Terrace  in Des Moines Washington on Saturday, January 12th
Here is part of Wally's obituary (it can also be seen on https://bonneywatson.com/obituaries/2018/12/Wallace-Kenneth-Meyers.html):

Wallace Kenneth Meyers, passed away December 28, 2018 at the age of 97.  He lived a full life and was deeply loved.  Wally was born November 11, 1921 in Estevan, Saskatchewan.   He received the WWII Victory Medal. As a professional civil engineer, he worked on numerous important hydraulic projects to prevent flooding and enhance living for countless numbers of people.  Wally married Ellen Hartwig in 1948 in Minneapolis where they began their family of five daughters.   He settled in Seattle and worked for and later retired from the Army Corp of Engineers.  After Ellen passed away in 1970, Wallace ventured to work in Italy and Germany and later married Edith Volkert.  Together they shared many travel adventures.  He loved baseball, curling, lawn bowling, bocce ball, and was an avid bridge player.

JPLBC BOWLERS AT NATIONALS
The Road to the Nationals…

  • Being a member of Jefferson Park Lawn Bowling Club means you are part of a larger bowls network. As a JPLBC member you are also a member of the Northwest Division of BowlsUSA and a member of BowlsUSA, the national bowls organization that represents the USA in the World Bowls arena.

  • With practice and dedication, you can take this sport to levels beyond social games and leagues. Six of our JPLBC members did just that in 2018.

  • Alexis Vanden Bos, Rikki Ricard, Phyllis Counts, Chris Davis, Andy Klubberud and John Hollingsworth competed and won the qualifying Northwest Division play down tournaments necessary to advance and compete in the 2018 National Lawn Bowling Championships. An elite group of 48 bowlers, from all seven national divisions, traveled to Sun City, AZ in November to compete in the championship tournament.

  • Our division, comprised of seven states, was represented 100% by JPLBC members. While the championship titles were awarded to other competitiors, we could not be more proud of our bowlers. Alexis, Rikki, Phyllis, Chris, Andy and John represented the division and JPLBC well with competitive games and true sportsmanship. Huzzah!

The day began ominously with pouring down rain, but brightened up and was quite beautiful, if a little chilly. We had some new folks try lawn bowling for the first time or carve pumpkins, plus lots of cute kids in costumes who all got a gift bag. And after a short respite the party kicked off and there was much clowning and (literal) monkeying around. And lawn bowling in the returning downpour by our friends from Tacoma. Speaking of Greens…..a message from Paul Shapiro

Don't Shoot The Messenger - Update from the Greens Chairperson

I recall a time about 4-5 years ago when Green 1 was relatively pristine, and no one wanted to bowl on Green 2. How a few years have changed the greens. This has been a learning year for me as I come to the task knowing absolutely nothing about greens care. Willy has been a tremendous help, and a huge thanks to the mowing crew and those souls who have provided assistance.

Green two is in relatively good shape, though we have developed a problem in the middle of the green with faerie ring and the good folks at Golf have helped us and laid down fungicide. Remember: we are dealing with nature and nothing happens overnight.

Green One is a challenge. Due to a problem with the irrigation system and a dry weather, green one has experienced severe problems. There are areas on Green one which are dead and will need to be replugged with live grass. Bringing the green back to it vital state may take a year or two.

In the next month (if all goes well) we will be verticutting the greens (which removed thatch) and the plugging and sanding both greens. We are dependent on the equipment from golf so we don't know exactly when we will be doing wither task. When we plug and sand, we will need a good crew to help out and my understanding is that the process takes the better part of a day. Please  let me know if you would love, love, love to help out.

See you on the Greens.

Paul

2018 August

FIRST AND FOREMOST

Our Club President asked if she could lead off the newsletter with a very important message.  All rise…

Letter from the President,
Happy summer everyone! As we enjoy these hot sunny days, and get some prime time on the greens, I am already thinking about September, late summer bowling, and extending our season into autumn. I am also really excited for our bowlers who are going on to the Championships, and representing JPLBC. But speaking of September: Please put September 5th on your calendar. This is the date that our new lease goes before City Council. We need your support!

·       Postcards will be available at the clubhouse that you can fill out with a message to Council. Please write why JPLBC is important to you. Keep it friendly and positive. You can send mail them in in yourself, or drop them back at the club and we’ll send them collectively.

·       We’d love to have some folks in Council chambers that afternoon, to physically show support. The meeting is at 2:00pm and usually lasts between 1-2 hours.

·       We need 2-3 people to prepare a 2 minute speech to give at the beginning on the meeting. There is open public comment before any meeting, and you can sign up when you arrive. Please contact Gina (gina@ginatolentino.com) or Kathryn Rathke (kathrynrathke@gmail.com) if you are interested in speaking, or need more info.

Please feel free to contact me about any other issues or ideas or thoughts you may have for the club and I can find a way to get you involved. We can make the club what we want it to be! Thank you to ALL of the volunteers who have put in time to make our club awesome. I love you!!!
xo, Gina

SELF IMPROVEMENT FOR THE NEW AND NEWER BOWLER

Our own Richard Krueger has put together a truly delightful Help Guide, What the New Or Newer Bowler Needs to Know, to help newer club members feel comfortable bowling with with more experienced ones.  The full document is attached (I promise, it’s NOT malware :-), but here is a wee sample to whet your curiosity.

“Now a word about skips. Most are quite mellow, but some are bossy, and a few are control freaks. When you draw partners, you might get a non-mellow one. Don’t panic.”

Enjoy!!

Grass:  Apart from referring to the surface, ‘grass’ is used as a reference for the directional line the bowl takes in order for it to curve toward the jack.  “Too much grass” means your bowl was wide, “Take more grass” means your bowl was narrow.

Trial Ends:  At the start of a tournament, trial ends are when each player rolls 2-4 bowls down and back to get a feel for the green.  These ends do not count in scoring, number of trial ends are announced prior to starting by the tournament director.
